Outreach Programming Ideas:

Performances/School Tours

  • Secondary music students can visit feeder schools to perform a set of music and talk about the music programming offered at the local secondary school

  • Provide an opportunity for elementary students to ask any questions they might have, speak to the music teachers, and current students of the program

  • Elementary students could also come watch a performance at the local secondary school; opportunities for outreach and fundraising

  • Extension opportunities: Instrument workshops where secondary students can be mentors to elementary music students and lead instrument specific workshops. This provides small-group instruction and more opportunities to connect in a smaller setting

Joint Rehearsals

  • Elementary students can be invited to partake in weekly Concert Band/Mass Band rehearsals at the local secondary school

  • Gives elementary students an opportunity to tour the local secondary school, play more challenging music, and form meaningful connections to the students currently enrolled and the music teacher(s)

  • Collaborative opportunities, practicing leadership skills, hands-on learning, mentorship, inspiring learner interest

  • Extension opportunities: Elementary students are invited to perform the repertoire they have been working on throughout the semester at the Winter or Spring concert
