Tip #4 - Meet and greet new parents

Work with the principal to find opportunities for council members to meet more parents, and new parents. This might include general information nights or welcome events for new parents, or more focused information session

We hold an annual open house night for the programs offered at our school. Families and incoming students are given information brochures and are organized into groups where they get a tour of the building and an opportunity to speak to teachers. In the Music department, we use it as an opportunity to showcase different student performances and will perform in the front foyer to welcome families. The information night is usually held in October, so we use our student acts to promote that you too, could learn a whole piece of music and be performance ready in two months time. When families come into our Music classroom, they will receive information on our courses, get to speak to current students on their experiences, and view a photo wall which features pictures from our students' various performances and excursions.

In the Spring, we hold an Arts department open house night, and will invite members of the community to come enjoy an evening of Arts celebrations. It is a nice way to reconnect with student families we met prior in the year during open house, parent-teacher interview night, or through our regular e-mail/phone communications, and celebrate the annual student successes within the department.
