Introduction

Hi all, nice to meet you! My name is Lilac and I am a long-term occasional Music teacher in Toronto, Ontario. I acknowledge that I am hosted on the lands of the Mississaugas of the Anishinaabe, the Haudenosaunee Confederacy and the Wendat, and am grateful to learn and work on this land. For the first half of this course, I will be located on the opposite end of the world in Southeast Asia! I am looking forward to engaging in discussion with you all while I battle jet lag. After this course, I will be halfway through the PME program.

Making my classroom a safe space where each student feels valued is a top priority for myself as an educator. Understanding culturally relevant pedagogy and learning about strategies to implement and apply these understandings in my daily classroom practices is something that I wish I had more time to partake in. I am glad that this course provides me the opportunity to do so. I noticed the Harvard IAT implicit biases tool is upcoming in one of our modules; this is a resource I explored in a previous PME course, and something I brought to my own students to try out this year. I look forward to revisiting it in this course.

Thanks for reading, and chat soon.
