Summative Task Description:

Students will be composing a 24 or 36-bar long étude for their instrument. There is a program notes component which will include information on their creative and compositional process. The assignment draws on concepts covered in the Composition unit and will allow students to build upon their learning using: the elements of music, chord quality, key signatures, rhythm, form, melodic structure, and music technology. Students will use Noteflight (or a notation software equivalent) to write out the étude. The summative task also includes a performance aspect where criteria such as tone, articulation, tempo, and phrasing will be evaluated. There will be class work periods to write the composition, ask questions, and receive both peer and teacher feedback.
