Students from all types of learning backgrounds will feel safe and represented in the classroom.
I will plan a variety of activities that are to be completed individually, in partners, small groups, and group ensembles (for music), providing students with numerous chances to succeed. Music Education provides a community for students to feel welcomed. It gives them a safe space that they can come to and make good memories with their peers, while still learning all the while. I hope to be the type of teacher that builds strong relationships with their students, is enthusiastic about teaching and learning, and accessible and accommodating.
The lessons and information that I teach should be relevant to the curriculum, current ongoing world events, and be inclusive to all.
I plan on teaching a variety of music from different genres, time periods, and backgrounds, so that my students learn a diverse selection of repertoire. I will be respectful when teaching World music and students will recognize the reality of histories, cultures, and perspectives through research and discussion. I will aim to teach, not practice culture in the classroom, and promote a safe and respectful environment.
Students will be able to apply the learning skills from the classroom to their everyday lives and beyond.
I hope that my students will apply their musicianship skills to their everyday lives and be the best versions of themselves. No matter what subject I am teaching, or what role in education I choose to take, I want my students to leave my class feeling like they can take at least one thing they learned that day and apply that learning elsewhere.
I aim to integrate different subjects (i.e. reading, writing, listening skills, history, math) into my Music and Drama lessons. While I may be teaching a specialized Arts subjects, I think that it is important to have some cross-curricular content integrated into the learning. This enables students to gain more experience with multiple subjects, and allows them to see how the Arts curriculum is connected to other subjects they are learning in school.
I value honesty and will be open to making mistakes, learning from them, and trying out new things in the classroom. As an educator, I want to model responsible behaviour and take responsibility for my actions. I will aim to be the type of teacher that admits when they are wrong, or when they do not know something, because I believe that honesty is an important trait to have. I hope that my students will be encouraged to work hard, knowing that I believe in them, and will push them (reasonably) to grow. I strive to continue my learning and improve upon my teaching. Learning does not end when we leave the B.Ed. program, or when we start leading our own classrooms. By being open to learning, we are more acceptable to change, and when our students see us modelling this behaviour, they will feel encouraged to do the same.
