BOPPPS Metacognition Lesson Plan
B - Bridge In:
Have students watch the video Metacognition: Thinking About Thinking
Students will add their thoughts to the video and metacognition strategies they are already using to the class Mentimeter. The teacher will project the Mentimeter on the board after the video and go through the class responses.
O – Outcomes: Students will…
1. Identify their thought processes when practicing and performing music
2. Reflect and observe on metacognition practices they are already using
3. Consider how they could incorporate metacognition strategies into future projects and apply it to other subject areas
P – Pre-Assessment:
Students are engaging in an class discussion via Mentimeter, after watching the Metacognition: Thinking About Thinking video
P – Participatory Learning Activity:
Students receive a new piece of music. This can be tied into the unit that the class is currently working on. Students will record strategies they used to learn the music and document questions they asked themselves throughout the learning and planning process. They can also note down any emotional responses they had to learning the new music.
Students will engage in a think-pair-share. They will discuss their most effective practice strategy when learning a new piece of music, and try out their partner’s recommended strategy. Students will consider how different approaches work for different people, and what works for them may not be suitable for another learner.
P – Post-Assessment:
Students will be assessed informally during the think-pair-share activity, as well as the exit ticket. If students have any outstanding questions from the lesson, these will be addressed. If a common theme or learning experience was noted by multiple students, this could be addressed to the whole class.
Exit ticket reflection:
What practice strategies work best for you?
Did your partner’s strategies work for you? Why or why not?
How could you use these metacognition strategies in other subjects?
S – Summary
Students will hand in their exit ticket to the teacher. The mind map of learning strategies from the pre-assessment activity could be printed out and posted in the classroom after the learning activity.
