Music provides students with a space to express themselves creatively, while developing literacy and valuable life skills. It gives them unique opportunities to develop their understandings. I will establish encouraging and respectful relationships with my students and the school community. As an educator, I also believe that it is important to continue improving upon myself and deepen both my educational and artistic understandings. I strive to do this by expanding on my professional development knowledge, and collaborating with other teachers both within and outside of my teachable subjects.

MUSIC COMPOSITION UNIT EXIT CARD

I created a Music Composition Unit exit card using Google Forms. Students were asked to write about a concept they enjoyed, a concept they found challenging, something they wanted to learn more about, and any other information they wished to share with me. It was interesting to see how some students really enjoyed certain activities, while others found them challenging. There was an overall appreciation for the hands-on activities that provided students with an opportunity to learn from one another and feel connected.

DAILY AGENDA GOOGLE SLIDES

I open my classes with a Google Slides Deck featuring a Canadian Artist of the Day, Land Acknowledgement, ice breakers, mental health check-ins, and musical jokes and quotes. During my 2020-2021 placements, it was a way for students to interact with me and their peers via the chat or by coming off mic. Students were also encouraged to submit their own musical jokes/quotes and earned a Google Classroom badge for their participation.

JAMBOARD ACTIVITIES

One effective way to hold virtual classroom discussions, is to have students share their thoughts and understandings through Google Jamboard. The site allows for students to type text, upload images, and draw. It is an anonymous way of checking in, though there are still ways to hold students accountable, such as asking them to initial their postings.
