PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT LOG 2020-2021
A log of the professional development workshops I have completed during my B.Ed year.
GRADE 11/12 MUSIC COMPOSITION UNIT PLAN
This is the modified music composition unit plan outline I created for my Grade 11/12 York SVS practicum.
Highlights from this unit plan include; lessons on music theory, electronic composition, and music history. It also features interactive learning experiences, numerous technological classroom tools, opportunities for students to reflect and share their work, and assessment as, of, and for learning.
ÉTUDE SUMMATIVE ASSIGNMENT & RUBRIC
This was the unit summative task I assigned during my York SVS practicum. The main learning goal of the assignment was to demonstrate an understanding of the elements of composition and reflect on the creative process. Students were required to compose a 24 or 36 bar long étude and create an accompanying program notes sheet with information on their creative and compositional process. The assignment drew on concepts covered in the composition unit; the elements of music, chord quality, key signatures, rhythm, form, melodic structure, and music technology. Students had the option of either performing their étude live, video or audio recording it prior to the presentation, or submitting an mp3 file. Finally, they were asked to use the notation software flat.io to write out their étude. The rubric features a checklist for students, clearly listed prompts, a variety of performance options, and a detailed list of criteria in the application section.
THE FUNKY FROG ASSIGNMENT EXEMPLAR
I wrote an exemplar étude to give students a guide as to what I was looking for in their assignments. I showed my students how my composition met all of the criteria by going through the rubric and comparing it to my work. In my lesson PowerPoint, I marked up my score to visually showcase how I included all of the assignment elements.
