Example 1: Capstone by J. Chin

Evidence of knowledge-based content

This presentation includes thoughtful understandings on key themes regarding environmental health and waste management. There is a detailed data analysis using graphs, videos, and visuals that highlight student knowledge prior to the activities being conducted, versus afterwards. The presenter considers bias and limitations which could affect data results. I appreciated how this in-class lesson was extended to the community in order to reach a wider audience.

Evidence of scholarly activity in preparation

The presenter included their own data analysis and findings and there was some research included. This Prezi included detailed knowledge and understandings from the presenter, however a proper References page and citations were missing. The usage of citations could have strengthened the scholarly activity within this Capstone.

Evidence of rigorous research enquiry

As mentioned previously, the presenter demonstrated a strong foundation of understanding key topics, but connecting those ideas to peer-reviewed sources would have been an asset to the presentation. I was able to follow their methodologies and activities well, despite not having much background on the topic.

Technical innovation and creativity

As somebody who always appreciates visual learning, I thought this Prezi was very engaging and clear to follow. The presenter utilized a variety of visual sources such as text, images, and videos. In my experience using Prezi, it can get a little disorientating when moving slides around because you can move them anywhere on the grid. I thought this presenter did a great job at maintaining a clean layout and being mindful of spacing.

Audience appeal

This presentation could be reviewed by educators, community partners and stakeholders, and policy makers. The format of this Prezi can be easily shared globally, making it accessible for all viewers.

General impact

Overall, I appreciated the thoughtfulness that went into this project, the data presented in a clear and visually appealing manner, and the accessibility of this Capstone. Connecting knowledge back to peer-reviewed and scholarly articles would have strengthened the presentation.

Example 2: Capstone by T. Quách

Evidence of knowledge-based content

This Prezi featured a great deal of research on alternative education opportunities for adult students. There were many methods provided, though I thought that the researcher could have selected a few to focus on, to avoid the presentation from appearing too busy.

Evidence of scholarly activity in preparation

There was an abundance of research done on schools, programs, and visuals were provided for the reader.

Evidence of rigorous research enquiry

The presenter utilized Prezi to include a combination of text, images, videos, and many links. It was evident that there was a lot of information provided, but again, the presenter could have narrowed down the topic to provide clarity.

Technical innovation and creativity

The presenter created an organized Prezi and made the presentation visually engaging. For those that are less familiar with the topic, a summary of some of the link content would have been helpful.

Audience appeal

I think this is a very informative presentation to give to students who are considering alternative education. The students at my school mostly attend post-secondary institutions after graduation but we do have several who consider alternate places or go straight into their professional careers. I think that with some edits, this could be a presentation the guidance department could use to inform students of the options.

General impact

Overall, I would say that I enjoyed reading this presentation. With some edits to the layout, it might make it clearer for the audience to follow. This is a very important topic that I do not hear about as much as I should in my professional context, so having this information provided to me now has deepened my own personal inquiry.

Project Brainstorming

I considered three types of possible formats I could use for my project. A PD Presentation in the form of a Google Slides would be most appropriate for my professional context, because it could be presented at a staff meeting or PD day and allow for staff to visually engage in a hands-on experience. A second option would be a podcast because I could include audio examples of the music and musical theatre excerpts I plan to use in my presentation. Though, from the podcast example I looked at in module one, I noticed that I appreciated having both auditory and visual elements in a project, and a podcast format would only be able to provide auditory examples. Lastly, a research paper would help me best organize my thoughts and ideas because I could organize my topics into subheadings and it is easier for me to generate a creative flow this way. I am strongly considering going with the PD Presentation in slideshow format, as it will allow for me to present my ideas in a cohesive method that will also be visually appealing to my audience.
